If you love Sophie Kinsella and Emily Giffin, you'll love this heartwarming debut from a fresh voice in contemporary chick-lit that offers a lighthearted and fun take on friendship, love, and how to recover from past mistakes.

For twenty long years, Gigi Goldstein has been pining away for her best friend’s guy. She knows it’s wrong and it has to stop, but she hasn’t been able to let go ever since they all met on the bus to summer camp back when they were 7 years old. The same week that her best friends finally announce their wedding date, Gigi loses her high-profile design job. With all of her dreams unravelling, she runs to the last place she remembers being happy.

Taking the Head Counselor position at Camp Chinooka, Gigi hopes to reclaim the joy she felt as a camper, but the job isn’t all campfire songs and toasting marshmallows. Gigi’s girls are determined to make her look bad in front of the boys’ Head Counselor—the sexy but infuriating Perry—and every scrap of the campground is laced with memories.

When Gigi finally realizes she can’t escape the present by returning to her past, she’s forced to reexamine her life and find the true meaning of love. But will she be able to mend fences and forgive herself before she loses her one real shot at happiness?

YA Review My Thoughts

One S’more Summer by Beth Merlin is a young adult contemporary romance, and is the first book in the Campfire Series. I am a sucker for summer camp stories. I think they are the perfect summer pool/beach reads, and One S’more Summer is a great one. I loved the story and I am super excited for the second book in the series, which comes out at the end of this year.

One S’more Summer is the story of Gigi, who is going through a rough patch at the start of our story. I really liked Gigi, and I certainly felt for her, though things always tend to happen for a reason. I thought that was particularly true in her case, and by the end of the book I was pleasantly satisfied that things turned out much better for her than I initially thought they would. After a string of bad luck, Gigi decides to get away for the summer, and she goes to her favorite childhood sleep away camp. Only this time, she is a camp counselor.

I totally got where Gigi was coming from. Since her adult life wasn’t going so well, she wanted to recapture some joy from her childhood, but she soon learned the lesson that working at a summer camp is not the same thing as going to a summer camp. (though as far as summer jobs go, it is a pretty great one, in my opinion.) I liked the summer camp setting. I love that it incorporated some of my favorite camp memories, like Color wars, and it had a great cast  secondary characters. I really liked Jamie and Perry.

Perry and Gigi had the kind of dynamic that I love to read about. I’m sorry, but the love/hate relationship will never get old for me. I live for the competition and the banter that typically accompany a good love/hate trope. And let me tell you, this was a great love/hate relationship. Gigi and Perry are in a fierce competition to win the best camp counselor award, and some of their scenes are hilarious. Perry was my favorite character in the whole book.

Bottom line: Whether you were a summer camp kid like myself, or new to the ins and outs of summer camps, you will get a kick out of One S’more Summer. It was a fun read, full of summer camp fun antics, great characters, a flirty and bickering slow burn romance, and it sets the stage for what is going to be an excellent series. I really enjoyed this one. I can’t wait for the next book. Plus, this is another author I get to add to my attorney/author list. 😉
