I’ve sworn off men.
All men.
Famous last words, right? You’re expecting some epic tale of reluctant love and my dramatic change of heart? Well, you’re not going to get it.
I’m stubborn. And headstrong. And I’ve just survived the worst three years of my life. After escaping an abusive boyfriend to live in hostels and cheap hotels while I worked my way across Europe, I’ve come to two conclusions.
The first? Now that I’m back home, I’m going to squander my expensive culinary degree on a food truck that caters to the late night drunk crowd.
The second? I’m going to prove to the bastard across the plaza that my street food is better than his fussy five course monstrosities.Killian Quinn might be Food and Wine’s Chef to Watch Out For. He might have a Michelin Star. He might have every food critic in the city wrapped around his too-large fingers. But he’s also pretentious and unbearably arrogant and the very opposite of me.
So he can keep his unsolicited advice and his late night visits and his cocky smiles. I want none of it. Or him.
I want the opposite.
The Opposite of You is the first book in the adult contemporary romance Opposites Attract series by Rachel Higginson. I flippin’ LOVED this book. It is about time I had a 5 star contemporary read and this one earned every bit of those 5 stars. It is so excellent that I want to pick it up and read it again…immediately. You know when you love a book so much you immediately want to read other books like it? Well, The Opposite of You did that to me. I am now craving a great fight/bantering dynamic, so leave me your best new adult/adult recs below.
The Opposite of You is told entirely from Vera’s point of view. Vera is a trained culinary chef, a very talented one at that, but because of a troubled past she doesn’t feel like she will ever be able to have her own kitchen. So she opens up Foodie the food truck to start her dream of doing upscale comfort food. I totally want Foodie to be real because seeing her weekly menu’s made me seriously hungry! The catch is, she opens Foodie up right across the street from the fanciest restaurant in town, with the most famous chef in town- Killian.
To say that I loved the interactions between Killian and Vera would be a total understatement. They are both hard-as*’s and both totally hilarious with each other. Killian would send spies to order her food and sneak it back to him and then send her his notes tearing the food apart. And Vera would retaliate in awesome ways. They may be one of my favorite book couples of the year. Killian is totally book boyfriend list worthy. I just loved him! But together they are even more magical. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I really hope we get to see Killian and Vera in it some more. I have a feeling I know who one of the future couple is going to be. View Spoiler »
Bottom line: If you like your contemporary romances full of banter, chemistry that sizzles off the page and beyond excellent pacing and writing, you need to read The Opposite of You. This is my first Rachel Higginson book, but it will not be my last. I couldn’t put this book down. It was like a perma smile read for me. I loved it so much. And I need more! The Opposite of You is one of my favorite reads of 2017! Everyone needs to go out and buy this book today. Trust me. You will love it.
TEASERS
“I didn’t come here to spy on you.”
His gaze narrowed. “Then why did you come?”
“I needed to see what the fuss was about.”
“And?”
“Don’t tell me you’re one of those guys that needs his ego coddled?”
He leaned in, brushing his shoulder against mine. “Every guy is that guy. Don’t single me out.”
I tried not to smile. Really. I gave it my best effort. “Honestly?”
He pulled back, holding my gaze and nodding. “Why do you think women always have the power?”
He dropped his head in relief, his forehead brushing my cheek. “Thank you.”
“I hope your ego recovers,” I joked in an attempt to untangle us from this spot—figuratively and literally. He was still draped over me, making all my neglected girly parts wake up and pay attention.
He chuckled, his chest vibrating against mine with the sound. “My ego is never safe around you, Delane.” Lifting his head, he caught my gaze and held it. His hands brushed over the counter and over my hips. For a second I was afraid he was going to start tickling me again, but then his fingertips dipped beneath my white t-shirt and his hands wrapped around my waist instead. “Thank you for removing the review.”
“You already said that,” I whispered, nervous and excited and confused all at once.
“I mean it though.” The corners of his mouth lifted in a sincere smile. “I just wanted you to know.”
All I could do was blink. I knew he was going to kiss me. I just knew it.
