I have noticed that this year I have had way less five star reads than I have in previous years, which kind of bums me out, but it does make finding a five star read even more special! My last five star read is The Secrets of Jane: Forgotten. I loved this book so much! It is the first book in the adult dark fantasy romance series called Improper Bastards by author Charlotte Mallory, and it was freakin’ fantastic!
In The Secrets of Jane we meet our main characters, Jane and Soren. Jane is a girl who holds many secrets and is just trying to keep her head down and live an uneventful life. But When Soren comes bursting into her village looking for her with orders to take her to the council, Jane knows that the gig is up. We don’t know what she is hiding but we do know that she thinks the Council will do very bad things to her.
Soren is a member of the noble class and he is a fierce mercenary. I loved their interactions from their very first scene together. Their chemistry is explosive, as are their tempers and personalities. I loved peeling back their secrets and magical abilities. Jane is a healer and Soren is an empath. There is a lot of cursing in this book and some dark themes, so be sure to check out the content warnings before reading. If you like spicy romance, fantastic banter, forced proximity and enemies to lovers then this is a wonderful book to check out!
