Shanghai is under siege in this captivating and searingly romantic sequel to These Violent Delights, which New York Times bestselling author Natasha Ngan calls “deliciously dark.”
The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution.
After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on the warpath. One wrong move, and her cousin will step in to usurp her place as the Scarlet Gang’s heir. The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood. If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less.
Roma is still reeling from Marshall’s death, and his cousin Benedikt will barely speak to him. Roma knows it’s his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he’s determined to set things right—even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure.
Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Roma’s cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all. Shanghai is already at a boiling point: The Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day, and gangster rule faces complete annihilation. Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they aren’t prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other.
Our Violent Ends is the second book in the These Violent Delights duet by author Chloe Gong. This duology is set in historical 1920s Shanghai, China and is a fresh reimagining of Romeo and Juliet, with gang wars, action and romance galore. I loved both of the books in the These Violent Delights duology. I thought the atmospheric writing and description that Chloe Gong woven into this tale was simply magical. (Violent…but magical). I couldn’t put this books down. I binge read them in about a day and half! I have seen a few readers term these books as slow, but I honestly disagree. I thought the rich detail throughout the story really enhanced my reading experience. I was transported to the glitz, the glamor and bloody world of Shanghai, and I fell in love with these characters, their story and their romance. I had high moments and plenty of sad low moments while reading, and I loved every second of them! If you are looking for a fresh take on Romeo and Juliet, look no further then These Violent Delights and Our Violent End! I loved them and I can’t wait to see what author Chloe Gong brings us next!
Our Violent Ends picks up after that heck of a crazy ending from These Violent Delights. After reading the ending of book one, I was so happy that I had an ARC of book two to pick up so I didn’t have to wait . (binge reading for the win!) In Our Violent Ends, Juliette and Roma have to band together to face a bigger enemy in Shanghai. There are major Communist vs. Nationalist undercurrents in both of these books with paired really well with the time period they took place in. I rather enjoyed that aspect of the story because I am big history nerd, and tensions were appropriately high.
Knowing the story of Romeo and Juliette, I had an idea of where this book was going to take us, but I was not able to predict how emotional the journey was going to be. I love Chloe Gong’s writing, she knows how to tell an impactful, engaging and emotional story! Our Violent Ends is a fantastic ending to a fantastic duology. I am not going to lie, these books had me stressed out while I was reading them…in the best way. I loved the writing, the world, the characters. Chloe Gong hit it out of the park with Our Violent Ends! I loved this book!
