In a world where marriage doesn’t exist—only seven-year contracts—you don’t marry, you sign. You don’t divorce, you breach. And sometimes, you just expire.

In this hilarious conclusion to Erin Lyon's I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions, Kate has accepted a job practicing signing law, the one type of law she swore she'd never do - especially since what she thought was her very own happily ever after turned into just another expired contract. But between Kate's embarrassing penchant for running into exes in court, clients determined to use her as their very own therapist, and a couple having a knock-down, drag-out over the custody of the family guinea pig, at least the job's never boring.

But while Kate finally has a handle on her career, her love life is still, well, complicated. The former love of her life, Jonathan, wants her back. Her current main squeeze, Dave, wants to take things to the next level, but she still can't shake her wolf-in-sheep's-clothing vibe about him. And then there's Adam, her mad crush who really wants to be her friend. So, to sum up, one questionable ex, one player with a capital "P," and one guy who's kind of stolen her heart even though she's in the friend zone. This should be a piece of cake.

Unconditionally is both a sweet and sexy romantic comedy and a hilariously relatable look at finding happiness where you least expect it.

YA Review My Thoughts

Unconditionally is the second book in the adult romantic comedy series called Contract Killers by Erin Lyon. I loved the first book, I love you,  Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions (See my review here). The contract Killer series is set in a world where the concept of marriage has turned into a series of seven year contracts. At the end of your contract term, you and your partner can choose whether or not to re-sign for another term of years.

Unconditionally is part two of Kate’s duology. In the first book, she is blindsided by her partner when he doesn’t want to re-sign, which sets of a change in Kate’s life. We follow Kate as she navigates a new job and lots of new lover interests. It ended on a nasty cliffhanger, but Unconditionally picks up the day after book one ended and we get to see the continuation to Kate’s story. I loved Unconditionally even more than I loved the first book, and I think that has everything to do with how awesome Kate is. She is so level headed and honest, and fair and so nice. I want to be friends with Kate in real life.

In Unconditionally not only do we get to see how Kate’s romantic life turns out, and yes she is still juggling multiple guys throughout Unconditionally, but we also get to see a big window into Kate’s life as a new signing attorney. I have no idea if other readers will find Kate’s days as interesting as I did, but I loved that such a big part of this book was the daily life of a new attorney. We got to see lots of clients, last minute hearing overages (which turned out to be HILARIOUS with the Judge). I wasn’t expecting so much of the focus of this story to be about Kate’s actual job, but I was really pleased that it was.

By the end of the first book, I was firmly on team Adam. I love him and I love him with Kate. We do get to see a good bit of Adam in this story, but the whole story is told through Kate’s point of view, and I would love to see another book, or even some deleted scenes, from Adam’s perspective. I just want more Adam!! Because a good portion of this book is Kate at her job, with her friend Logek, or seeing someone else, we didn’t get to see nearly enough Adam for my tastes. I found myself wondering what Adam was up to several times while I was reading. But every time we did get a scene with Adam in it, both Kate and I totally lit up! The romance in Unconditionally was everything I wanted. And at the conclusion we got to see a nice little epilogue with the man Kate ends up with. I really hate typing the word conclusion, because I really would love to see more books set in the Contract Killers world. Selfishly, I want to see more of Adam. I would love to see something more from him, but I will take anything in this world that I can get. Books about Logek, Jared or any other “contract killers” (men that only go after women that have signed a contract with another man) would be great.

Bottom line: I think The Contract Killers series is the perfect series for fans of witty romances with tons of humor and lots of heart. This book needs to be made into a movie. I can really see this story translating well to the big screen. I can’t wait to read more from Erin Lyon. Both of her books were just what I wanted- tons of witty, romantic fun. Unconditionally is one of my favorite reads of 2018.

About Erin Lyon

Erin Lyon graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English and then worked in broadcast television for 10 years before going to law school. She is now a practicing attorney and blames all of the people in her life for not trying to talk her out of the whole “becoming a lawyer” thing. (Except for her brother who, to be fair, did say, “Really?”)

After finishing law school, she completed her first novel, I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions, and began working on the sequel, Unconditionally. Erin lives in Northern California with her husband of 20 years, her teenage daughter, and a house full of rescue animals (and a husband-imposed ban from visiting her local SPCA).

I would go back to a time in my life that I made a really bad choice, and undo it.. and hope that it wouldn’t ruin the rest of my life either!
