From Victoria Scott, author of FIRE & FLOOD, comes a thrilling story of impossible odds.

Ever since the Titans first appeared in her Detroit neighborhood, Astrid Sullivan’s world has revolved around the mechanical horses. She and her best friend have spent countless hours watching them and their jockeys practice on the track. It’s not just the thrill of the race. It’s the engineering of the horses and the way they’re programmed to seem so lifelike. The Titans are everything that fascinates Astrid, and nothing she’ll ever touch.

She hates them a little, too. Her dad lost everything betting on the Titans. And the races are a reminder of the gap between the rich jockeys who can afford the expensive machines to ride, and the working class friends and neighbors of Astrid’s who wager on them.
But when Astrid’s offered a chance to enter an early model Titan in this year’s derby, well, she decides to risk it all. Because for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, it’s more than a chance at fame or money. Betting on herself is the only way she can see to hang on to everyone in the world she cares about.

You may have guessed that I like animals. Probably because I’m allergic to every living creature on earth except humans. I’m seriously waiting for the day when my husband makes me sneeze. It comes as no surprise that I love writing books with fuzzy, furry creatures in them. Pandoras? Here you go! Steel horses? I got you! A kitten for one Dante Walker even though he despises cats? Yep!

I cut my teeth on books with animals. So today I’m sharing a few of my favorites. Let me know in the comments which of these you’ve read, and if there are any others I missed!

Black BeautyBlack Beauty

Everyone on God’s green earth has read this book, right? Yeah, glad that’s settled.

Animal FarmAnimal Farm

This was one of my absolute favorite forced-fed books in school. Did I care about the allegorical elements? Nope. I only cared that animals spoke and had agendas and, okay, got pretty violent.

CrenshawCrenshaw

A book I just read about a boy with an imaginary cat! I have one question the author didn’t answer… If I had an imaginary cat friend, would he make me sneeze?

Old YellerOld Yeller

A book published in 1956, which caused the complete and utter breaking of hearts around the world. This book is genius. Evil genius.

The Fires of Calderon The Fires of Calderon

One of my favorite animal books is the Balance Keepers series by Lindsay Cummings. It’s filled with fantastical creatures, and that, my fine folks, counts as an animal book, because I make the rules here.

Watership DownWatership Down

Watership Down has rabbits that speak to each other, people. It’s a loooong book, and truth be told, I haven’t finished this puppy yet, but what I’ve read so far is brilliant!

I’ve read Black Beauty, Old Yeller, and Watership Down. I also read Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Watership Down fostered my love of reading.
