{Review} #Whichwood by @TaherehMafi

Whichwood is a middle grade fantasy novel by Taherah Mafi. Even though this book is technically middle grade, I think it will appeal to fans of young adult books. It is a very detailed and long novel, and rather dark in some parts, and it felt like upper middle grade/lower young adult to me. I read, and really loved Furthermore last year. (you can check out my review here) So, I was super excited when I saw that a companion novel set in the same world was going to be released. So, it should come as no surprise that I absolutely loved Whichwood as well. It is a delightful book. Whichwood follows our main character, Laylee, who lives in the village of Whichwood. Whichwood is set in the same world as the village of Farenwood, but it is a totally different place. Farenwood is a town where colors come to life, and Whichwood is a town that is in stark contrast. Laylee finds herself becoming more and more colorless as… Read more »

I loved Furthermore, and you will see why in my review below, but today’s post is a little something different. Because Furthermore takes place in Ferenwood, a town where color kind of takes on a life of it’s own, I decided to share some of my more colorful #bookstagram pictures with you. My feed has been very colorful lately (which is a big change from my normal wardrobe…) So, check out some brightly colored book pretties, check out my review and then be sure to enter the awesome giveaway below, which I partnered with Penguin Random House to offer. You can win a copy of Furthermore and some of Tahereh’s favorite things!   Day 13: Book Rainbow. Seeing rainbows always makes me happy and seeing a book rainbow with all the brightly colored books makes me extra happy. This is the perfect way to start a Saturday 🙂 #thebooksparrowaugustbookchallenge16 A photo posted by @bookbriefs on Aug 13, 2016 at 6:30am PDT A little late but this picture took some time… Read more »

{YA Review} Exit, Pursued by a Bear by E.K. Johnston @ek_johnston

{YA Review} Exit, Pursued by a Bear by E.K. Johnston @ek_johnston

Exit, Pursued by a Bear is a young adult contemporary standalone by E.K. Johnston. This is a book impressed me. It takes some hard to handle subject matter, and does a really good job with it. As you can see from the summary, Exit, Pursued by a Bear deals with rape and a resulting pregnancy. This is a topic that is so hit or miss for me. I think it is an important topic, and one that should be talked about but so many times I feel that the book becomes the rape, and the rape is all that anyone can see. It overshadows everything else in favor of the author’s message. And regardless of whether it is well done or not, and regardless of whether I agree with the author’s message or not, it just doesn’t resonate with me. That’s not how I connect with books. But something about Exit, Pursued by a Bear told me that I should read it. And I am so freakin’ glad that I… Read more »
