New York Times
best-selling author Kendare Blake takes us back to the demon capital of the world in this highly anticipated sequel to In Every Generation, set in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Frankie Rosenberg is coming to terms with the fact that she’s the newest slayer, but that doesn’t mean she has it all figured out just yet. She and her friends are still reeling from the deadly attack on the annual slayer retreat—and the new revelation that some slayers may still be alive. She’s got her own Scooby Gang, but sometimes feels more on the outside than ever. She throws herself into training with her mom, the great witch Willow, and her new Watcher, Spike, but they’ve got demons of their own to contend with (both of the real and metaphorical variety). Buffy made it look easy, but being a slayer is hard—and lonely.

But Frankie doesn’t have time to wander through Sunnydale Cemetery singing about her new responsibilities. With news of Buffy’s possible demise, Demons are making their way back to Sunnydale in droves, called by a Hellmouth that is starting to reawaken. And then an oracle brings news of a new Evil brewing…something called The Darkness. Could this be what attacked the slayers? And is it coming for Frankie?

With a satisfying blend of fresh and familiar, humor and (stakes through the) heart, One Girl In All The World is a breathtaking continuation of the series that Booklist calls a worthy successor to the Slayer stories” (Starred Review on In Every Generation).

YA Review My Thoughts

*Note: this is the second book in a series that should be read in order. If you are new to this series, you can check out my review of book 1 here*

One Girl in all the World is the second book in a new young adult paranormal series by Kendare Blake. I was so super excited for this book because I am a HUGE Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, and I really enjoyed In every Generation. This series takes us back to that very beloved Buffy world. This young adult series focuses on a new generation of Slayers and their very own scooby gang. I really enjoyed this book! I thought that it was perfectly reminiscent for all fans of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom, with plenty of nods and references to the show and town. We also get to see lots of familiar faces. If you are a a fan of Buffy, then I think you will really enjoy this series.

One Girl in All the World takes place after the events of the first book with Frankie as the new slayer. Because Frankie is Willow’s daughter, she is not only a slayer but also a witch, which is a super interesting combo. I really enjoyed this sequel because I easily got to fall back into a beloved world, and there is a ton of stuff going on as we get to know this new scooby gang. The pacing and writing of this book was wonderful and I easily devoured this in one sitting. It feels classically buffy and new and fresh all at once. I loved the big bads they were dealing with with the Hellmouth coming back to life.

I think my favorite part of this book was traveling back to Sunnydale. It felt like being wrapped in my favorite warm and cozy blanket.  There are still many unanswered questions to be explored in the next couple of installments and I am super excited to dive into them. This series definitely makes me want to go back and binge watch all of the seasons of Buffy! Bottom line: If you are a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this book was a lot of fun to read!

About Kendare Blake

Kendare Blake is the author of several novels and short stories, most of which you can find information about via the links above. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July (for those of you doing book reports) in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She enjoys the work of Milan Kundera, Caitlin R Kiernan, Bret Easton Ellis, Richard Linklater, and the late, great Michael Jackson, I mean, come on, he gave us Thriller.

She lives and writes in Kent, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.
