Fireblood is one of those books that I want to give a higher rating than 5 stars. I fell in love with Fireblood. I don’t even know which was my favorite character- Zara or Devlen. Now, I didn’t read the summary before I started reading Fireblood. I choose to review the book a few months before I read it, and by that time I forgot what the summary said. I liked it that way, I was more surprised and it worked out well. The world building in Karm is amazing and creepy as heck. Holy cow did Trisha Wolfe do an awesome job. I thought the concept was so cool, but again freaky and scary. The book takes place in the future, but after a devastating war, only a part of the country survived and Karm’s leader chose to live in Camelot’s time period. So it was a unique mixture, of some modern day conveniences but the speech and dress were all middle ages. (What was the deal with the bird though? I don’t know if that ever got addressed but it was such a small thing that I may have been the only one to noticed that. Haha)
Zara is so strong willed. I loved that about her, and funnily enough that seemed to be what drew everyone else to her as well. Sebastian and Devlen both admired Zara’s strength. But as much as I loved Zara, I think my favorite has to go to Devlen. I was drawn to Devlen right away. And like I said, I hadn’t read the summary before reading so I was still trying to figure out what the deal was with Sebastian, and before I knew it I was totally team Devlen, and I just wanted to push Sebastian out of the picture. I am not going to tell you how things turn out, but I will say this. Fireblood is a standalone book so you do find out how everything turns out and I loved that. ….But I am not quite ready to say goodbye to the characters. I loved this book that much.
The book is only told through Zara’s point of view, but it really worked out well for this story. I felt like I was on this journey alongside with Zara. I was confused when she was confused. At one point I completely trusted Sebastian, just as Zara did. I saw the vulnerability in him and it was beautiful. But was it real? or Was it an act? Devlen tries so hard to always mask his emotions, but sometimes they just start peeking through, and those were my favorite moments. The romance in this book is not rushed at all, and it just seems so real.
I can’t even find anything to fault with Fireblood. The writing is wonderful and the world building blew me away. The characters are great too. Devlen is protective and fierce on his own, not that Zara needs it, but it was still just great to see her bring out that side of him. All other book guys are going to have a hard time measuring up to Devlen. That is for sure. I want one of him all to myself. Fireblood is an amazing mixture of fantasy and dystopian. I can’t say enough about how great Fireblood is. I think this is a must read of 2013.
