three-half-stars

A dapper vampire. A sullen merman. Two heirs to a great conflict—and each needs to claim a beloved to become his kindred’s champion.

High school senior Ember Goodwin never had a sister, but after her mom’s remarriage, she now has two. The eldest is no stranger to her—Ivy is a witty girl in her grade who’s almost never spoken to the shy bookworm before—but she’s surprised to find the popular girl quite amiable. Their burgeoning friendship is tested, however, when Dean Horne, a pale, besuited charmer, shows interest in them both and plans to reveal his appetite for blood to the one who’ll stand by his side.

Seventeen-year-old Ivy Sheppard is tired of splitting her time between her dad’s and her mom’s, particularly when her dad uproots their lives to move them in with his new wife and step-daughter. Used to rolling with her parents’ whims, she tries to make the best of it and befriend her nerdy new step-sister. Her hectic life grows more unwieldy when she catches the eye of junior Calder Poole, whom she swears she sees swap well-toned legs for a pair of fins during a dip in a lake. Now she’s fending off suitors left and right, all while trying to get to the bottom of the strange happenings in her town.

The first book in the Blood, Bloom, & Water series sets family against family and friend against friend as an epic, ancient war comes to a head in a supposedly sleepy suburb.

YA Review

My Thoughts

FANGS & FINS is a young adult paranormal romance by Amy McNulty. It is also the first book in the Blood, Bloom, & Water series. This is the first book I have read from author Amy McNulty, but I will be on the lookout for more from her now, because Fangs & Fins was a strong start to what looks to be an interesting series. Fangs & Fins is the perfect book to feature on my blog today because today is national paranormal day! So it is only fitting that I feature a paranormal book. I loved how much was going on in Fangs & Fins. There are some classic young adult elements thrown in, like step siblings and family secrets, plus lots of great characters and a fast paced always moving plot to keep your interest. Fangs & Fins was a great start to a series that I am interested in continuing on.

We start out our journey meeting Ember, who has always wanted a sister. Her wish is granted in her senior year of high school. Enter Ivy. Ivy brings a whole lot of action into Ember’s life. I enjoyed reading from Ember’s point of view. It helped me connect with her immediately. One of my favorite things about the Blood, Bloom & Water series is that it is going to feature lots of different kinds of paranormal creatures. I enjoy books that focus on one creature, like werewolves or vampires, but I adore books that throw a lot of different creatures into the mix. It always allows for interesting politics and differences between the paranormals, which is a story element I love. Fangs & Fins did just that. I especially loved the pairing of vampires vs. merfolk, which is not a combination I have read about before. It made Fangs & Fins feel unique, which is really hard to do with young adult paranormal these days.

I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters in Fangs & Fins and I know there will be even more characters in the coming books. So far, I think my favorite is Calder. 🙂 There is just something about him that makes me want to root for him. But we also have Dean and Orin, whom I also really enjoy. Fangs & Fins is full of great, multi faceted characters. Ivy and Ember are very different. Ember is shy and reserved, and Ivy is super popular and very strong willed. But they work really well together, which I appreciated. I always love to see a good friendship and companionship between main characters, instead of seeing them constantly trying to cut the other one down. Amy McNulty did a great job of not pitting the sisters against each other just to create drama for drama’s sake. I applaud that!

Overall, I really enjoyed Fangs & Fins. It was a book that got better and better as it continued to go on. It is full of action, adventure and all kinds of paranormal goodness. Fans of paranormal romances will want to add this series to their collection. I have a feeling the second book is going to be even better than the first since the stage is now set for a pretty epic book two. There are plenty of twists, turns and secrets to keep you flipping pages. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
