We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is a best selling young adult contemporary. I remember hearing a ton of hype surrounding this title when it first released a few years ago, and I always meant to read it. I know people either loved it or pretty strongly disliked it, but the summary and mystery of it all drew me in. So when I heard that they were coming out with a super special deluxe edition, I knew I finally had to get this book off my To-Be-Read list. And I am so glad that I did. We Were Liars is a crazy ride! I was so not expecting all of the twists and turns. It was emotional and I can totally see why this book is such a hit. I really enjoyed We Were Liars.
The writing in We Were Liars is pretty spectacular. It is lyrical and jarring all at once. It is not told in verse, but the writing has a little bit of a stream of consciousness feel. I was really digging it. E. Lockhart does an awesome job painting the picture of these rich families that spend their summers together. Reliving some poignant summers with the children of the families rocked me to my core. I did not expect this book to be so crazy and emotional, but it was. It is a really wild ride. One that I did not see coming at all! You have to read We Were Liars to experience it for yourself.
If you are new to the series, now is the perfect time to check out the book, because the deluxe edition is packed with so many exclusive extras. The extras really enhanced the reading for me. The Deluxe edition comes with never-before-shared letters from Gat to Cadence, a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the author’s creative process, awesome maps, including the author’s hand-drawn map of Beechwood Island and the Sinclair family tree, and lots more.
Bottom line: Whether you are discovering the Liars for the first time, or whether this is an old favorite of yours, now is the time to fall in love with We Were Liars. This is a book that I think everyone needs to read and experience. It was just that for me, a crazy experience. One that I thoroughly enjoyed. I will not soon forget this book. E. Lockhart sent me on an emotional roller coaster ride that I could not stop, even after I was done reading. We Were Liars is an excellent book.
