Victoria Marshall is living a lie. She works for a member of the Knights of the Dragon, a secret society that traps and uses dragons for their own gain. As a child, she made an unlikely friend—a drakon. He went missing, and she’s spent the past twenty years searching for him. The only thing distracting her from her mission is Luther Henderson, her boss’s new head of security.
Luther is also living a lie. One, if discovered, could lead to a fate worse than death. He’s attracted to Victoria, but can’t fully trust her, doesn’t know if she’s truly innocent or a true member of the Knights. It’s not only his life at stake, but those of the people he loves.
As they’re thrust deeper into the dangerous dealings of the Knights, they each have to share their secrets in order to survive.
Drakon Unchained is the fifth book in the blood of the drakon series by author N.J. Walters. This book can be read as a standalone, but it is part of a larger interconnected series. I have not read the previous books in the series, but boy oh boy do I wish that I had. Mostly because I enjoyed this book so much, that I wish I had read them all in order. I didn’t have too many issues jumping into this world in the fifth installment, but I do think if I had read books 1-4 first that I would have had a better foundational idea about the workings of the Knights of the Dragon, which is a secret society that is integral in all novels of this series. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Drakon Unchained, and I plan on grabbing the first four books immediately and diving right back into the series. If this book seems like a storyline that you would enjoy, I would encourage you to grab the first book in the Blood of the Drakon series and read them in order.
In Drakon Unchained, we meet Victoria and Luther. Victoria can dream walk and she can see people’s past and present. Through this gift of hers she meets a Drakon that she discovers is a prisoner. Drakons are the product of one dragon parent and one human parent. The knights have been hunting them so that they can drink their blood, because the blood of a Drakon will cure any illness and will keep someone young forever. I really liked Victoria and Luther. Luther is head of security. Both Victoria and Luther have a lot in common, because they both have their own agendas.
Drakon Unchained is a fast paced, character driven story. I loved watching Victoria and Luther interact. Their romance was a big part of the storyline, just the way I like it. But there was also enough of a plot to give the story some real substance in this world. I know there are still issues circling around the Knights but Drakon Unchained wrapped up nicely, and really did act as a standalone set in a bigger universe. Fans of dragon stories and of fantasy/paranormal romances with a good dose of secrets really really enjoy Drakon Unchained. As I said earlier, I do wish that I had read this series in order, but I plan on reading books 1-4 ASAP.
