BREATHE DEEP . . . AND JUMP IN

At the ends of the earth, Patagonia is a land where ambition trumps reason and the savage summit of La Aguja lures the most determined climbers. It's also the last spot a "play-it-safe girl" like Auden Woods expects to find herself. But she'll lace up her brand-new hiking boots and do whatever it takes to secure a dream job at an adventure magazine . . . even if it kills her. And it just might. When disaster strikes, her only chance at survival comes in the form of the surliest, sexiest mountaineer ever to come out of Scotland.

After a climbing accident cost him his brother, professional mountaineer Rhys MacAskill is at the end of his rope. Redemption is not in his future. That is, until a terrifying storm blows a budding journalist into his tent and it's up to him to make sure they both survive until morning. Despite the demons weighing on him, Rhys can't resist the temptation of the charming American and one wild night just isn't enough.

Auden and Rhys soon learn there are no shortcuts as they navigate their way between life, death, and atonement, and discover something they never expected—love.

My Thoughts

With Every Breath is first book in the new adult series, called the Wanderlust series. It takes place at the Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Chile. I love to hike, so a hiking romance novel is right up my alley. With Every Breath is the story of Auden and Rhys. I absolutely loved the romance and the setting of this story. I could not put this book down. In fact, it was one of my favorite reads of the year.

Auden and Rhys each have different reasons for their hike in Patagonia. Auden just landed a writing internship with an outdoors magazine and she wants to interview hikers to upgrade her internship to a paying job. Rhys has a big secret that has been haunting him. More and more of his story unfolds as With Every Breath unfolds and his story really gripped my heart. I felt for him so much, because his past was consuming him. Auden sees him and sees what his past is doing to who he is, and I loved that about her. The two of them were like magic on paper. I could not get enough of their interactions, their experiences, and their road to romance. With Every Breath is the kind of book that made me ignore everything going on around me. I was so ensconced in their world, and the magic of Patagonia.

I cannot wait to see what is going to come next in the wanderlust series. I really hope the next book also focuses on Auden and Rhys. It seemed like their story stopped at a good place for them, but I am not done with these two. I want more, more, MORE. There are plenty more adventures for them to go on. (yes, I am begging you Lia Riley) Sometimes a book just speaks to you so completely that you fall in love with it. That happened to me with With Every Breath. I fell in love with the characters, with the setting and with the story. With Every Breath releases tomorrow and I recommend everyone grab a copy. I don’t care whether you are a hiker or not, and I don’t care if you are burnt out on new adult. This is one story that you do not want to miss. Trust me. With Every Breath is one of my favorite reads of 2015.

Interview

1. Describe With Every Breath in a tweet (140 characters or less)

A journalist heads to the ends of the earth for a story and takes a walk on the wild side with a surly Scottish mountaineer

2. What kind of research did you do in preparation for With Every Breath?

I hiked the same area as the book’s setting (Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Chile) about ten years ago. To prepare for drafting, I went through all my old guidebooks, maps and photos. It was so much fun to revisit the memories and some of my misadventures (like the landslide) ended up working themselves into the final version of the book.

3. Who was the hardest character to write, in any of your books?

They all have their moments. Whenever I want to expose a characters sensitive little underbelly they become very stubborn and difficult.

4. Are you more of a hiking or hotel kind of woman?

Hiking! Better yet, glamping. I’d love to travel the country in an airstream 🙂

5. If we had an author talent show, what would your talent be?

Skipping stones (we’d have to go to a lake but I’d “rock” it)
Book Briefs: I love hiking too Lia! In fact, yesterday I just hiked to the highest peak on Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. We would get along just fine.

About Lia Riley

After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, Lia Riley scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. When not torturing heroes (because c’mon, who doesn’t love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about as-of-yet unwritten books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. She and her family live mostly in Northern California.

  1. Great review, Michelle! I loved this book, too. Rhys and Auden were so real, and I loved watching them fall for each other and help each other begin to heal. Have you read Lia’s Off the Map series? It’s one of my favourites. 🙂
