Ice is in her blood.

Eighteen-year-old Waterrunner Eira Landan lives her life in the shadows — the shadow of her older brother, of her magic’s whispers, and of the person she accidentally killed. She’s the most unwanted apprentice in the Tower of Sorcerers until the day she decides to step out and compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms.
Pitted against the best sorcerers in the Empire, Eira fights to be one of four champions. Excelling in the trials has its rewards. She's invited to the royal court with the “Prince of the Tower,” discovers her rare talent for forbidden magic, and at midnight, Eira meets with a handsome elfin ambassador.

But, Eira soon learns, no reward is without risk. As she comes into the spotlight, so too do the skeletons of a past she hadn't even realized was haunting her.
Eira went into the trials ready for a fight. Ready to win. She wasn't ready for what it would cost her. No one expected the candidates might not make it out with their lives.

This is the first book in a young adult, epic fantasy that's a tale of competition, coming of age, distant lands, elemental magic, and romance. It's perfect for fans of the Legend of Korra, Truthwitch, and A Sorcery of Thorns.

My Thoughts

A Trial of Sorcerers is the first book in the young adult fantasy series, A Trial of Sorcerers by Elise Kova . A Trial of Sorcerers is set in the Air Awakens universe, but is it’s own unique story. I think A Trial of Sorcerers might be my favorite of Elise’s books yet! I have not read her air awakens series, but now that I have gotten a taste of the world I am super excited to read it. While I didn’t have any trouble following the story, I do feel like I would have had a better initial picture of the overall world if I had read the previous series prior to jumping into A Trial of Sorcerers, but it didn’t detract from my reading enjoyment. If you are a fan of fantasies that feature rich magic descriptions and you love a good completion or tournament, then I think this series is going to be right up your alley. I really enjoyed a Trial of Sorcerers and I can’t wait to continue on with the series.

In A Trial of Sorcerers, we meet our main character Eira who is a sorcerer that not only has a water affinity but she also has some other powers. She hears voices, and at first some of some of her additional powers are a bit vague, but we do know that something bad happened with her magic a few years prior and she is now ostracized because of what she did. It is all very mysterious, but it did a great job at capturing my attention and interest in her character. I really admired her determination to prove herself at any cost. Which leads us to the awesome competition. The tower is hosting a competition, in a series of increasingly intense trials. The reward for winning is getting to represent her empire in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms. I am such a sucker for trials in fantasy books, and these did not disappoint. I can’t wait to learn more about the forbidden magic and just what is going on with some of the characters.

A Trial of Sorcerers is filled with a crazy competition, fantastic elemental magic and great complex characters. I found myself rooting for so many different characters. I am desperate to continue on with this series, and I am hoping for more romance in the next book because oh boy do I love it so much. Eira is such a fascinating character, initially because of the big incident everyone keeps referring to, but as I got to know her, her capabilities captured my full attention. I just love her!

I have read several of Elise Kova’s books, and this one is my favorite yet. I love the world and the setting in A Trial of Sorcerers. If you are a fan of young adult fantasy, you need to check this book out. I really enjoyed it.
