Series: Operation Cupid #1
Genres: adult, Romance, Fantasy & Magic, mythology
three-half-stars

When a sassy and disillusioned phone operator gets a hold of the power of Cupid, watch out!

A mysterious caller…

Locke Casey is nothing special. Sure, her job as a phone operator job is a little unusual, but it pays the bills, and as a broke, twenty something college student, she doesn’t have much room to be picky. She is used to odd calls from strange men thanks to her job, but when one begins quizzing her about love, she finds her life turned upside down.

An unbelievable turn of events…

Turns out the creepy caller might actually be Cupid. For some unknown reason, the god of love passed on his powers to Locke, which makes no sense considering she’s never been in love and considers the whole concept overrated. Talk about an unlikely candidate!

A mission to save the gods…

Having Cupid’s powers alone might be more than she can handle, but with her godly benefactor doing a disappearing act, all the gods are in a flurry, and it’s up to Locke to save Olympus. All in a day’s work, right?

My Thoughts

Battlefield Love is the first book in the new adult operation cupid series by Skyler Andra & Mila Young. The operation cupid series is a mythology and fantasy romance, that has a really cool premise. You all know I am a sucker for anything mythology, and I love Mila Young’s Gods and Monster’s series so much, so I was extra excited to see what they would do with another mythology series. The coolest part of Battlefield Love is the world setup and the treatment of the gods of greek and roman mythology. I did have a small issue with one aspect of the story, but I love the setup and Battlefield Love has all of the makings and potential to be an awesome series. I can’t wait for the next book.

In Battlefield Love we meet our main character, Locke is just a normal woman, until Eros (the Roman version of Cupid) pulls her into the world of Gods and their human Avatars. The concept of Avatars is one that I have not seen explored in mythology fiction before, and I have to say I really enjoy it. All of the Gods live up on Mount Olympus and in this book, they don’t really travel to earth. But they still need some connection to earth to be able to have their powers and influence over the land. This is where the Avatars come in. Avatars are a gods manifestation in a human. The human takes on some of the abilities, characteristics and traits of their God counter part. It is a very interesting concept, and I can’t wait to see it explored further in the next book, and for us to meet even more Avatars. In Battlefield Love we know that Locke is Eros’ avatar, and we also meet Mads and Rane- the avatars of Hermes and Ares respectively.

Rane was my favorite character in the whole book, hands down. I just love him! But he is also one part of the aspect of the story I had a slight issue with. I understand that as Eros’ avatar Locke is going to have some of his “love” characteristics, which in turn might make some guys act a little gooey around her, but I felt like there was a bit too much insta- something going on in Battlefield Love. I don’t know if it was love or lust, but it felt a bit rushed. It wasn’t a biog deal, because I still really enjoyed the story and I really, really love Rane. So I certainly want to see more of him in the next book, but I hope we get some more answers about Locke that might make things make more sense in the romance department. I know there was a lot going on very quickly in this story on purpose. I mean, all of the characters were on the run, so I do understand some of the haste, but I am kind of hoping things will slow down a bit in the next book so we can get to know the characters and learn a little more about each of the avatars.

Overall, if you are a fan of fantasies featuring Roman gods like I am, and you like a fast paced book with plenty of action and romance, you will want to check out Battlefield Love. I am already itching to get my hands on the second book. I breezed through the first book much too quickly for my liking. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen next. This was a very fun read!
