Portal by Imogen Rose

Come Find Me Two Years Ago…
Six words that propelled ice hockey playing tomboy, Arizona, into an alternate dimension.
She suddenly found herself in the past. In one moment she went from being an ice hockey playing teenager in New Jersey to a glamorous cheerleader in California. She found herself transported from a happy life with her dad, Dillard, to a new, strange one living with her mother whom she hates. Apparently it’s a life she’s always lived in.
Everyone knows her as Arizona Darley, but she isn’t. She is Arizona Stevens.
As she struggles to find answers she is certain of one thing- that her mother Olivia, a brilliant physicist, is somehow responsible…
PORTAL is the story of the repercussions of Olivia Darley’s attempt at creating a perfect world for herself and her children. Arizona’s quest for answers threatens to undermine the seemingly perfect world that her mother has so carefully constructed.
PORTAL is the first book of the Portal Chronicles. Fans of time travel, romance, and the supernatural will enjoy Arizona’s quest for answers.

Here is an excerpt from Portal:

“So what’s up, Arizona? It seemed serious,” Maria said, as she took a big bite of her slice.
“I’m thinking of giving up cheerleading.”
Maria gaped and put down her pizza. Ali just stared at me.
Maria stuttered, “Cheerleading is our life. It’s what we do! You can’t give it up! Why would you even say such a thing?”
“I want to give something else a try, and cheerleading clashes with it.”
“What?” Ali practically yelled at me.
I hesitated, then murmured, “Ice hockey.”
They went silent and looked at each other with somber expressions. Then, they burst into laughter amidst snorts and guffaws. Ali’s face was streaming with tears.
“O-M-G, that’s the funniest thing ever! That’s why we love you; you’re hysterical, but B-A-D! You really had us going there for a minute.”
I took a deep breath and ran my fingers through my hair. “Wait here a second, I have something to show you.” I got up and left to get my hockey stick from the Jeep. The girls were still laughing when I came back in, but stopped short when they spied what I had in my hand.
Maria gave Ali a knowing smile. “Trying to impress Kellan? I thought something was up with you two in physics today. Are you suddenly into him?” she teased.
“No! I’m serious. I’m trying out for the varsity team on Thursday. This has nothing to do with Kellan or anyone else. It’s just something I have to do for myself. Please, try to understand. I’ll still hang with you guys and come to as many cheer meetings as I can.”
They both looked at me in disbelief. “You can’t even skate…” Ali murmured.
I shrugged; they could be right. “I just want to give it a try. Humor me, please?”
They looked at me like I had completely lost my mind. I guessed, in a way, I had.
“Will you come and watch me try out on Thursday?” I pleaded. This was going to be hard enough; I really needed them on my side. “I’ve even got a pink helmet–”
“They won’t let you, Arizona. It’s an all-boys team,” Maria pointed out. “Does Harry know?”

Meet Imogen Rose
Imogen Rose is the author of the bestselling YA series, the Portal Chronicles. She was born in a small town in Sweden and moved to London in her twenties. After obtaining a PhD in immunology from Imperial College, she moved with her family to New Jersey, where she’s been based for the past ten years.
For as long as she can remember, Imogen has dreamt stories. Stories that continued from night to night, from dream to dream. So, even as a child, going to bed was never an issue, just an anticipation of the story to come.
PORTAL, Imogen’s first novel, would have remained in her imagination, to be shared only with her daughter, Lauren, had her eight-year-old not insisted that she write it down. In the course of a month, Imogen typed while Lauren waited eagerly by the printer for the pages to appear, and a novel took shape.
The warm reception PORTAL received encouraged her to continue with the story and the Portal Chronicles. The Bonfire Chronicles is Imogen’s new YA paranormal series.
Imogen is a self-confessed Hermès addict who enjoys shopping, traveling, watching movies and playing with her dog, Tallulah.

  1. This kind of “time” travel where the character is surprised by the whole thing and has to adjust, is very interesting. How to solve this transport, for both the character and the author? Thanks for the chance to win, read and find out the answers!

  2. me

This looks amazing! The excerpt was very gripping, and it doesn’t feel too complicated or out-there for me to understand; I could tell what was going on, which is always a positive thing in a story. The story behind how the book came to be a book is really intriguing to me, and I’ve always wished I could come up with ideas from my dreams. My dreams are too convoluted, confusing, and bizarre to be anything more than enjoyable, however.

  3. Sorry if my comment doubles up! I crashed while trying to comment so have no clue if it went through or not!

I read Portal (and the rest of the series) when I first got my Nook and I LOVED it. I’m so happy it’s getting attention now.

  4. I love the cover. If it’s purple I’m looking at it I love time travel books. It’s not easy to come up with something new but I believe she has done it. It’s going one the top of my TBR list, which just keeps getting longer thanks to you. I would be great to win this, Thanks.
