Sisters
by Stacy Hackney

At its heart, THE SISTERS OF LUNA ISLAND is a book about siblings. My own life provided plenty of inspiration. The relationship with my younger sister was formative and enduring.

Sarah was my first best friend. The color pink was mine, the color yellow was hers. As a child, I talked to anyone who would listen while she was measured in her confidences. I was easy to anger and quick to forgive, and she was less emotional but could hold a grudge for days. Together, we grew up creating entire kingdoms in the sand dunes and recording imaginary radio shows on our Fisher Price tape recorder. She would sneak into my room at night when she couldn’t sleep, and I kept track of her whereabouts during the day, always fearful she’d get lost. I yelled at her for borrowing my Barbies and later my sweaters. She yelled at me for bossing her around. We banded together against anyone who betrayed us but occasionally hurled crushing insults at each other. We whispered secrets about boys and prank calls and sneaking out. And when we lost our beloved mother, Sarah was the only one who understood and could pull me out of that grief.

Today we work in the same industry and have children of similar ages. It’s not unusual for us to unwittingly buy the same gift for the other or to be reading the same book without discussing it in advance. But we are different as well, the same as we’ve always been different. She says I worry too much and that I’m too trusting. I tell her she needs to be more organized and less suspicious. Yet I value her intuition as much as my own. I call her every day. Sarah is still my best friend.

In THE SISTERS OF LUNA ISLAND, I wanted to write about the complications and comforts of growing up with siblings, and the ways in which we define ourselves by who they are or are not. Most of all, I wanted to write the story of a little sister who saves her big sisters because Sarah has saved me in a million ways. This book is dedicated to her, but I hope many readers will recognize themselves in the Lafleur sisters who differ as often as they agree, compete as eagerly as they encourage, and fight as fiercely as they love.

Little Women gets a Nevermoor twist in this bewitching novel about a young girl tasked to break a centuries-old curse or risk losing her beloved sisters.

Twelve-year-old Marigold Lafleur is the last of a long line of aromages: witches who blend scents into practical charms using aromagic. But ever since a terrible accident injured her father and damaged Luna Island, Marigold and her sisters, Birdie and Lou, have vowed to abandon their family legacy and mama’s way of life. Shunned by their neighbors and overlooked by their parents, Marigold relies on her big sisters above all else.

But when Marigold discovers a secret curse that threatens her family, her sisters can’t stop the impending danger. It’s up to Marigold and her best friend, Sam, to uncover the origins of the curse and break the spell. To do so, she must learn to trust her instincts and believe in her own unique magic or risk losing her beloved sisters forever.
