Summary(from Goodreads):

Enter the world of the highly-acclaimed Experiment in Terror Series by visiting…the Darkhouse:
There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twenty-something, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thing, there’s her past which she likes to pretend never happened, and then there’s the fact that she sees ghosts. Luckily for her, that all comes in handy when she stumbles across Dex Foray, an eccentric producer for an upcoming webcast on ghost hunters. Even though the show’s budget is non-existent and Dex himself is a maddening enigma, Perry is instantly drawn into a world that both threatens her life and seduces her with a sense of importance. Her uncle’s haunted lighthouse provides the perfect catalyst and backdrop for a mystery that unravels the threads of Perry’s fragile sanity and causes her to fall for a man, who, like the most dangerous of ghosts, may not be all that he seems.

This book is downright creepy! Seriously, I finished reading it at night and I had trouble going to sleep! I even woke up more than a few times in the middle of the night and when I was between sleep and awake, I even thought that I saw some things. That’s how realistic and awesome this book is. I love how scary it all was- I might just read the next one during the day. With all the lights on, and around other people, that’s all. 🙂

The best part about the Experiment in Terror series is that it’s mysterious enough to keep you asking questions and realistic enough for you to be thoroughly creeped out. You can actually see this happening. That’s what is so awesome about it. I have to know more though, I need to read book 2 ASAP because I am so intrigued by the cryptic old woman. I need to know what the connection is between Dex and Perry is!

Speaking of Perry, how awesome of a character is she? I related to her on almost every level. It has been a while since I have completely felt in-sync with the main character in a book. It was so refreshing to see someone like Perry. She is full of awesome and so likable that you will be jumping up and down rooting for her. Perry will be making my top ten lists of female characters, that’s for sure. I flat out loved her. She makes me even more excited to read the rest of the series.

I like that Darkhouse is complete and can stand on its own but the plot buildup is so intricately created that it weaves subplots in that will cross over the books. I love it when series are done this way. The ending leads up to the next book. i just really liked the way the book was set up. In full disclosure, Darkhouse did take me a little while to get into. (probably around 30-45 pages or so) but once I hit that 45 page mark, I was hooked and I didn’t even come up for air until the book was done. This is going to be one creeptastic series! One I am sure I am going to really, really like.

  1. I love books like this…they grab you and have you reading to the wee hours of the night until you finish it. I’m looking forward to reading this series. 🙂

  2. I read and reviewed this about a month ago and enjoyed it, yes Perry is a fun lead. I really liked her. Dex, still trying to figure him out. Love that it takes place right her in Oregon. Also loving the new cover. I am not entering since
    i have a copy 🙂

  3. I love this series! Perry is so engaging and likable. And Dex is, well…Dex. It’s hard to pin him down, isn’t it. Halle is a terrific author and if you think Darkhouse is creepy, just wait! Great review!

  4. This sounds like a series that should be read during the daytime in a crowded room. Also, you shouldn’t be alone for a long time after you read it!! Thanks for the heads up. I’m glad it’s realistic enough to be that creepy.

  5. Na

    I haven’t read a creepy book in a while. I remember reading one and not being able to sleep afterwards. If the story is good, then it’s creepy good 🙂

  6. I read this a couple weeks ago and I’m already reading The Dex-Files now. I’m nervous cuz then I’ll be impatiently waiting for Into the Hollow :/ Have you read any for from the EIT series? Dex and Perry are probably my favorite characters ever! Love your blog!
