{Review+Giveaway} The Forest Queen by Betsy Cornwell

{Review+Giveaway} The Forest Queen by Betsy Cornwell

The Forest Queen is a young adult fantasy retelling by Betsy Cornwell. It is labeled as being book 0.5 in the Mechanica series. While I have not read Mechanica, I believe this is a standalone story that is set in the same world. Mechanica is a retelling of Cinderella but The Forest Queen is a female retelling of Robin Hood. I loved that Robin Hood was in fact our main character, Sylvie. In fact, the Forest Queen has a very strong female empowerment vibe throughout. I enjoyed The Forest Queen. I am a fan of the tale of Robin Hood and I thought the Forest Queen provided a new spin on that story. That being said, while I liked this book, it didn’t completely blow me away. It was a good novel, but something stopped me from completely falling in love with it. In the Forest Queen we meet Sylvie and her brother John. I got the impression that Sylvie and her brother John used to be pretty close, but… Read more »

{ARC Review+Giveaway} FORBIDDEN By Eve Bunting

{ARC Review+Giveaway} FORBIDDEN By Eve Bunting

Forbidden is a young adult mystery by Eve Bunting. It is a dark and mysterious, quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the dreary, almost foggy atmosphere of the little Scottish fishing village, and I really liked how easily digestible the book was. It took me just under 2 hours to read Forbidden, and I walked away feeling like it was a complete story, not a novella. The romance in Forbidden is a nice aside but it is by no means the focal point of the story. After Josie’s parents both pass away from influenza, she is sent to live with her estranged aunt and uncle. When she gets to the town, everything seems a little strange. Just a tad off, including her Aunt and Uncle. It was hard not to get wrapped up in the creepy little town that Eve Bunting created in Forbidden. I could never pin down exactly what was going on. Eve did an excellent job of maintaining a mysterious air about her writing up… Read more »

{Review+Giveaway} An Inheritance of Ashes by @LeahBobet

{Review+Giveaway} An Inheritance of Ashes by @LeahBobet

An Inheritance of Ashes is a standalone young adult fantasy. The book takes place after a war has ended. A war between humans, the Wicked God and Twisted Things. That right there should tell you one thing about this book. It is going to be creepy. And honestly the chilling atmosphere that Leah Bobet created was my favorite aspect of An Inheritance of Ashes. Fans of atmospheric reads, will love that about this book. I am not going to lie, the first time that I read the summary, and started the book for that matter, for An Inheritance of Ashes, I thought it was a sequel. It is describing a war that just took place, and I thought I missed the first book that had the war in it. So if you are like me, that is not the case. An Inheritance of Ashes is the first book. Hallie and Marthe are sister’s, and they are the main characters of this book. They are taking place of the family farm in the… Read more »
