{Discussion+Giveaway} National Young Readers Day: Fav bedtime story & The Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly

Posted November 11, 2014 by Michelle @ Book Briefs in Giveaways / 14 Comments

Today is National Young Readers day and in honor of that I wanted to talk about one of the things that sparked my love for reading…

Bedtime stories!

I always loved to be told a good bedtime story, or 4, when I was younger. I couldn’t get enough of them, and even after I bugged my parents to read me book after book, I would have them book on books on tape to play while I would fall asleep. I loved books.

Some of my favorite books to read as bedtime stories were Dr. Seuss books. I loved them! Some of my favorites were Yertal the Turtle, the Lorax (it always made me cry)  and the Sneeches. I still love Dr. Seuss books.

And if I wasn’t reading Dr. Seuss books, I was reading anything anything and everything mermaid related.

In honor of National Young Readers day, I want to know what your favorite bedtime story was (or childhood story that made you love reading)

And because I love sharing the bookish love, I have an awesome MERMAID giveaway for you.

18601430Deep Blue (Waterfire Saga #1)
The first in a series of four epic tales set in the depths of the ocean, where six mermaids seek to protect and save their hidden world.

Deep in the ocean, in a world not so different from our own, live the merpeople. Their communities are spread throughout the oceans, seas, and freshwaters all over the globe.

When Serafina, a mermaid of the Mediterranean Sea, awakens on the morning of her betrothal, her biggest worry should be winning the love of handsome Prince Mahdi. And yet Sera finds herself haunted by strange dreams that foretell the return of an ancient evil. Her dark premonitions are confirmed when an assassin’s arrow poisons Sera’s mother. Now, Serafina must embark on a quest to find the assassin’s master and prevent a war between the Mer nations. Led only by her shadowy dreams, Sera searches for five other mermaid heroines who are scattered across the six seas. Together, they will form an unbreakable bond of sisterhood and uncover a conspiracy that threatens their world’s very existence.

Rogue Wave
Book 2 in the Waterfire saga

In this exciting sequel to DEEP BLUE, the mermaids are on an exceedingly important and dangerous quest. Their journey is testing their skills and their friendships, forcing them to grow and take on new challenges, and will alter their lives forever.

Serafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid, six mermaids from realms scattered throughout the seas and freshwaters, were summoned by the leader of the river witches to learn an incredible truth: the mermaids are direct descendants of the Six Who Ruled–powerful mages who once governed the lost empire of Atlantis. The ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis is stirring again, and only the mermaids can defeat it. To do so, they need to find magical talismans that belonged to the Six.

  1. I think that is where my love for reading really took root and grew as well! I love it!

I need to read this book, I am pretty sure I have a copy of it somewhere.

  2. The books that actually really got me into reading in Kindergarten were the Goosebumps books, and then in the first grade I became obsessed with Island of the Blue Dolphins. The Waterfire Saga looks really interesting; I will definitely have to add the series to my to-read list!

  3. Some of my favorite books as a kid were anything American Girl. Samantha was my favorite. The Chronicles of Narnia was great favorite also. Happy Young Readers Day. A Wrinkle in Time and The Westing Game. Babysitters Club read so many of them. Sweet Valley High to when I got older.

Deep Blue has a beautiful cover.
