The Upside to Being Single is a romantic comedy by author Emma Hart. This book was a ton of fun, from the New Orleans setting to the awesome banter between the main character and her boss. The Upside to Being Single is currently listed as a standalone, but the main character, Mellie has two best friends who are pretty much additional main characters Peyton and Chloe. Peyton is getting her own book, which is the start of the upcoming Experiment series, and Chloe’s story is slated to be the second book in that duet, so in my mind this is really the first book in the set of interconnected standalone trilogy for Mellie and her friends.
I really enjoyed The Upside to Being Single. It is full of humor and lots of unresolved sexual tension. IN fact, there may have been just a tad too much of it. I felt like by the time something actually happened between Mellie and Jake, the book was almost over. That bummed me out a little bit because I wanted to see more of these two actually together. But a bulk of the book is centered around the dance that they have going on, which don’t get me wrong, was really enjoyable. But I wanted them to move on to the next step just a bit quicker.
Mellie is such an adorable hot mess. She is so clumsy and she always seems to be tripping over herself when Jake is around. It was pretty funny. I love the setting and I love the set up. I feel like in The Upside to Being Single we really got to know the trio of girls, and I am super duper excited for Peyton’s story. I think I am going to like it even more than Mellie’s. Though, I am hoping that I get to see some of Mellie and Jake in The Hook-up Experiment. Though, I am sure that we will.
Bottom line: The Upside to Being Single is a fun, carefree and funny read. Fans of URST will enjoy this workplace romance. Emma Hart does an excellent job, as always, with writing humor into her stories. Each of the chapters started with a a numbered upside to being single. I loved them. They were so relate able and super funny! I liked this one and I am even more excited for her next book!
