Eva Walker is a seventeen-year-old math genius.

And if that doesn’t do wonders for her popularity, there’s another thing that makes it even worse: when she touches another person or anything that belongs to them — from clothes to textbooks to cell phones — she sees a vision of their emotions. She can read a person’s fears and anxieties, their secrets and loves … and what they have yet to learn about calculus. This is helpful for her work as a math tutor, but it means she can never get close to people. Eva avoids touching anyone and everyone. People think it’s because she’s a clean freak — with the emphasis on freak — but it’s all she can do to protect herself from other people’s issues.

Then one day a new student walks into Eva’s life. His jacket gives off so much emotional trauma that she falls to the floor. Eva is instantly drawn to Zenn, a handsome and soulful artist who also has a troubled home life, and her feelings only grow when she realizes that she can touch Zenn’s skin without having visions. But when she discovers the history that links them, the truth threatens to tear the two apart.

YA Review My Thoughts

Zenn Diagram is ayoung adult magical realism novel by Wendy Brant. Zenn Diagram was a super cute read that I quickly finished in one setting. It left me with a big smile on my face. It kind of reminded me of the last magical realism book I read, and loved, The Secret of  Heart Note. It was an adorable, quick and light hearted read.

Zenn Diagram is the story of Eva, who is a big math lover. I found Eva totally adorable. All on her own, but when you add in her unique gift she became extra interesting. You see, Eva can touch someone and know their thoughts and feelings. But what is even cooler, she can touch an object and know someone’s emotions and experiences as it pertains to that object. For example, she can touch someone’s graphing calculator and figure out what area of math is giving them troubles and is able to help them really easily. She makes a kick butt math tutor. Seriously, I thought this was the cutest thing. The book starts with her tutoring sessions. And then she meets Zenn. A dark and mysterious guy that she clicks with instantly.

The interesting thing about Zenn is that his and Eva’s relationship is both super cute and kind of awkward. Cute because they seem to like each other really quickly and watching them joke and flirt was adorable. But awkward because Eva can’t touch people, without being exposed to all their secrets (even though this is different with Zenn) and she gets a dark awful feeling from touching a piece of his clothing, so that makes her anxious. Not to mention Zenn has his own mysterious things going on. But still they can’t seem to stay away from each other. I don’t think I am doing a very good job of explaining this book, but it is a really cute love story. I totally enjoyed the character interaction and the writing.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a cute romance with a dash of magical realism thrown in, Zenn Diagram is a great book for you to check out. If you are looking for a day of lighthearted fun, this is the book for you. I loved reading Zenn Diagram.

About Wendy Brant

So my name alone should give you a clue that I graduated from high school when bangs were big and clothes were baggy. I went to Northwestern University and majored in journalism even though I had no desire to be a journalist. I’ve been married to a great guy for a whole drinking-aged person’s life. I’ve got two amazing and yet very different (and very tall) teenage kids. I like crappy food, pinning inspirational quotes on Pinterest, have a tendency to start paragraphs with “anyway”, and I wish I were funnier. I would love to be one of those really, REALLY funny bloggers (like Insane in the Mom-Brain) that makes you pee yourself a little bit. I am only moderately funny. I admit that. It’s one of my great sadnesses in life.

I started writing fiction when I was 10, but tried to be practical with the whole journalism thing. Didn’t take. Shortly after college, the fiction-writing desire reared its non-practical head and I’ve been writing ever since.

Anyway, I’m probably just like you. We’d probably be friends if we met in real life. (Well, let’s be honest. It’s likely that only my friends are actually reading this blog, so we probably ARE friends in real life.) But whether we are friends in real life, or just virtual friends through cyberspace, I hope you will enjoy your time here.

This is the first I’m hearing of Zenn Diagram and I’m so glad I did! I can’t wait to read this one! I love cute yet somewhat awkward Contemorary Romances with intelligent lead females! Add in some magical realism and it’s even more amazing! I’m excited to read Eva and Zenn’s story! 🙂

This one hit all the right notes for her, and I agree, Zenn and Eva was so cute and quirky. I thought the quads were total scene stealers too, and the epilogue left me with happy tears. Great review!
