At the onset of her training, they’d all but anointed Vera the Chosen One. Their hero who would retrieve the ancient relic capable of ending their banishment and returning the Skyborne to their beloved home realm, Idia.
Yet, ten years later, she never fully developed what they’d convinced her of. She had only a hairsbreadth more than the Common Power. They’d expected more from her. If she had failed, it didn’t matter. To them she was a tool.
They deemed her expendable, but Vera’s know-how and prowess proved undefeatable. Now free from the confines of a life shrouded with secrets and those whose only goal is to use her; she faces a new challenge.
But this time, the consequences are far more lethal.
Something is awry in the Realm of the Banished. Unrest permeates the territories. Regent Karish’s handsome son is out for revenge after discovering Vera’s betrayal. The ember is missing, and a new enemy is breeding an aerial army of creatures capable of blocking the Skyborne from their source of power.
With skepticism clouding her vision, she is torn between accepting her fate and losing the freedom she fought so valiantly to attain.
Her unexpected tie to this ancient and powerful relic catapults her down a path she never believed in and will force her to reveal long-hidden truths and prove to herself that she can achieve the impossible.

YA Review My Thoughts

Realm of the Banished is a young adult paranormal/fantasy mystery by author Jennifer M. Waldrop. This book had such an interesting premise that I couldn’t wait to dive into it. Part, fantasy/paranormal, part quest, part mystery and a whole lot of adventure. Yes, please…sign me up! And I have to say, I really enjoyed the adventure Realm of the Banished took me on. I loved the characters and once I picked up this book, I was easily able to finish it in one sitting because I was totally engrossed in the story.

In Realm of the Banished, we meet our main character Vera. What I loved most about her was her fierce sense of independence. She really is a strong young woman, who though I didn’t agree with her choices from time to time, I appreciated that she always owned her decisions. She is a skyborne, but she has some strange abilities that most skybornes do not possess. Because of her special abilities she is sent out to retrieve an artifact, which would allow her people to end their long banishment from the realm. That is really only the starting point of her quest and along the way she meets all kinds of characters. I really enjoyed the cast of characters in this story and I can’t wait to get to know them all a little better in the next book. Realm of the Banished clipped along at a fairly fast pace, which I loved, but it didn’t really allow me to get to know the characters in the level of depth that I typically enjoy. I’m hoping that is fleshed out a little in the next book.

Bottom line: If you are a fan of the chosen one trope and you love a good adventure in your fantasy books, then Realm of the Banished is a fantastic book for you to check out. This was a fast paced read, and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
