YA Review

My Thoughts

Horror Hotel is a standalone young adult horror novel by author duo Victoria Fulton & Faith McClaren. Horror Hotel is inspired by the real life Cecil Hotel in LA. The Cecil Hotel has a very colorful past, featuring many deaths (both suicide and suspicious) including the mysterious and famous case of 21-year old Elisa Lam. I have been fascinated by her case ever since I first heard about it, so when I saw the premise of this book, I was instantly reminded of the Cecil Hotel, and even more excited to see it was part of the inspiration. Even though this book is a standalone, I would love to revisit with this group of youtube ghost hunters as they visit other haunted locations (even more so if the locations draw inspiration from real life haunted spots, like with the Cecil Hotel!)

This group’s claim to fame is that they have a real life Ghost Detector (medium? Spiritualist?)- Chrissy can sense and see ghosts. Though that is totally cool, I do not envy her for a second. That is one gift or ability that I would not want to have in real life. Chrissy is constantly tormented with the ghosts around her, even if they don’t mean her any harm. I felt so bad for her, but it was a really intriguing concept as this group visited the hotel.

The authors did such a fantastic job crafting a perfectly timely ghost story featuring modern ghost hunter influencers, who go to the Cecil Hotel to make a youtube video of any paranormal activity they encounter. The story was spooky and a total page turner. I gobbled this book up so quickly, and I loved it! I think this book is perfect for seasoned fans of horror novels and new readers who are not quite sure about their horror novel comfort level. Horror Hotel was a great, quick read that I would recommend to everyone. It is definelty making me want to go back and watch some true crime youtube on Elisa
