Once Upon Academy Winter Ball is the second book in the fairytale anthology series. I really enjoy the idea behind this anthology. Once Upon an Academy is a magical school, where the descendants of fairytales characters go to learn to harness their magical powers and abilities. This collection of short stories are all written by different authors, and they each feature various descendants of fairy tale characters we know and love- all set in the same world. Here we get to see the characters ramping up to the end of semester Winter Ball. I love a good ball/school dance so I thought this was a fun setting and a really cool idea.
All of the stories are quick easy reads, and I liked that but I found myself wishing that some of them were a bit longer so they didn’t feel quite so rushed. I wanted the chance to get to know the characters a bit better. I enjoyed some stories more than others. Perle of Love by Marie Long was my favorite story of the anthology. I kind of wish that I started with volume one because I am sure that I would have gotten a little of a better background with some of the characters but I wasn’t ever totally lost with these stories.
Bottom line: if you are a fan of next generation type stories and you love a fairy tale retelling and quick easy reads, then I would suggest checking out these Once Upon an Academy anthologies. They are quick pick me up reads that were magical and fun. I will say that some of the stories could have used another sweep at editing and I did find myself wishing some of them were longer and more fleshed out, but overall I enjoyed this anthology.
