Sometimes it takes a pirate to catch a pirate.

With weather magic on her side, Lady Vice is the bane of the high seas, but she isn’t captain of her own ship. Yet. If she can persuade her captain to give her a command, she’ll be in charge of her own fate.

To pay off his family’s debts, Knigh Blackwood hunts pirates for the Royal Navy. And he’s damn good at it. When the bounty on Lady Vice increases, he’s determined to make her face justice, even if that means using unorthodox methods.

Forced to work together, neither can deny their mutual attraction. As they face battles at sea and schemes aboard their ship, they discover hints about a long-lost treasure that could be the answer to both their problems.

But treasure isn’t the only thing buried. Secrets best forgotten lie in wait that could blast them apart. And the closer Vice and Knigh grow, the greater the threat – to her freedom and to his family. Because for one to succeed, the other must fail.

If you love cunning heroes, feisty heroines, and enemies to lovers romance, you’ll love this new adult fantasy series that’s perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas and Miranda Honfleur.

As you might expect from pirates, these stories include mild cussing and spicy encounters.

My Thoughts

Beneath Black Sails is the first book in the new adult pirate fantasy romance series by the same name from author Clare Sager. I really enjoyed this pirate adventure where we get to meet the lovely Lady Vice, and the Pirate Hunter Captain Blackwood that is pursuing her. I can’t wait to continue on with this series because though it took me a little while to fully fall into the story, by the time I was done I was definitely excited to continue on and see where this series was going to take us next.

I really enjoyed the characters and also the magic present in this world. Here you are either human, with no magic, a fae with magic, or you can be the slightly more common fae touched human. If you are fae touched, then a fae has bestowed a mark and a magic gift upon you, but your gift does not work on other fae touched. Blackwood, or Knigh, and Vice, or Vee, both have magic abilities. Vee has fae charm and she can also control the weather (kind of). She can manipulate winds and currents, which is very helpful to have on board a pirate ship.

Lady Vice has a formidable reputation as a feared pirate queen, but all she wants to do is captain her own ship. Blackwood is sent out to capture Lady Vice, but once he gets to know her she is nothing like her reputation. Not to mention the matter of their attraction to each other. I really enjoyed the romance between Vice and Knigh but I didn’t fully believe it early on. It took me a little while to trust their connection and want to root for the two of them, but around the half way mark of the book, I got there.

I really enjoyed all the treasure hunting, and actual pirating that went on, and I hope that we get to learn more about Drake’s treasure in the next book (which after the end of this one, I am sure that we will) If you are a fan of pirate adventures that feature lots of swashbuckling, romance, betrayals and dominant females then you will really enjoy Beneath Black Sails. This was a solid story and I can’t wait to read the next book to see where Vee is off to next!
