For Lera, training has never been so hard. With the males’ power roaring in her veins and River’s cold demand that she master the magic before the third trial, something has to give. Worse still, River is keeping something from her. Something about his past and Lunos’s future.
For River and Coal, the past must stay buried. Though one male’s nightmare sits on a throne and the other’s hides in his soul, they are equally unprepared for Lera’s startling determination to undress the truth.
But when Mors’s Emperor Jawrar makes a play for Lunos, neither Lera’s fledgling magic nor the males’ old wounds can remain untouched—not if their world is to survive.

Trial of Three is the third book in the new adult fantasy romance Power of Five series by Alex Lidell. You all know how much I LOVED Power of Five and its’ follow up Mistake of Magic. It sent me into a spiraling book hangover. I feel like this is the type of series that I can read over and over again and love it just the same every time. The Power of Five series continues to be one of my favorite series of all time. In Trial of Three we get to see the Quint pushed to the limits of their abilities and we get to know all of the characters so much better.
In case you are new to this series, Power of Five series is a fae fantasy and it is the story of a group of four elite fae warriors, who have been searching for years for the fifth member that will complete their warrior quint. They are all shock to find it is a human girl named Lera. Lera and her fae are forced to undergo the trials that all quints must face in order to become a warrior unit. We also get to explore more about the magic that binds Lera’s quint together and the uniqueness of their bond. I love unraveling the secrets of this world. This is a series that must be read in order, and I think it is going to be four novels in length, but that already feels wayyy too short. (Alex, please here my plea for many more books!!!)
I’m going to talk about each of the members of the Quint and share some of my thoughts on them, but first I wanted to touch on the plot in Trial of Three. Here we get to see Lera and her Quint face another trial- this one so much more dangerous than the previous. Because this trial takes place out in the open, not in one of controlled battle arenas. In the last book we learned about a secret ability of Lera’s and in Trial of Three we see the almost desperate-ness of her quint mates to teach Lera how to hone in on this ability. I am not going to lie, there were times at the start of the novel and in the middle where I thought they were fighting a losing battle. I couldn’t see Lera making any progress with her ability, which scared me almost as much as it scared the guys. But I loved the pacing of the story. Nothing felt forced or rushed. Everything flowed perfectly, and culminated on a really epic fight at the end, which left me dying to get my hands on the fourth novel. (but, really, what else is new??)
In Trial of Three we got to see a nice balance of skill testing and romance. I loved that the romance was more of the front runner in this novel. In mistake of Magic we were more focused on the trials and learning about the new world and government aspects of the story, but in Trial of Three we got to see Lera form individual relationships with each of the guys, which I loved. I love all of the guys, but I now firmly have a favorite. I had my suspicions in the last book that Coal would be my favorite, and he definitely is. I am also really excited to finally get to another level with Tye, because I feel like he is holding back so much of who he is behind his smiling easy going mask. I know we are going to meet a whole new Tye in the next novel, and I am super there for it! Shade is really caring and provides great comfort. Tye is the jokester, but as I just said, I feel like we are about to see so much more from him. River needs to open up a lot more. We got to see that from him at the very end of the novel, but I found myself wishing that he would open up to Lera earlier on. And Coal. Coal is just so intense. I will always hold a special place in my heart for him, and I loved that we got to see him so frequently in Trial of Three. I felt like this was Coal’s book and I was loving it. Trial of Three might just be my favorite book in the series so far!
Fans of new adult fantasy romances do not want to miss this series because it will soon join your favorites shelf. As a reminder, there are multiple love interests in this series, but if you are unsure of how that will play out, just read the book! I promise you will be a convert and you will immediately fall in love with Lera, River, Coal, Tye, and Shade. I cannot get enough of this book! Everyone needs to read it immediately. (It is free on Kindle unlimited, so if you are a KU member, go grab this book this instant!) One of my favorite reads of 2018 and one of my favorite series of all time! It just keeps getting better and better!
