If you could have any kind of special powers, what would they be and why?
I’d like telekinetic powers for sure. It has sort of a lifelong obsession of mine. Like I wanted to be Matilda or the twins from Escape to Witch Mountain or a Jedi or the genie from Bewitched. Right now, because I’m a mom, telekinesis feels like the most practical special power to have. I could deliver snacks to my children and pack their lunches and re-do their ponytails and clean their rooms without having to get up from the couch. Everybody wins!

In The Possible, no one knew the truth about the main character, Kaylee. What is something most people don’t know about you?
I majored in American Government in college. I went in, I guess, thinking I might be interested in journalism and that department had a lot of courses about the media. Anyhoo, by the time I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me, I was too close to getting my degree to do anything about it.

What was the hardest part of writing The Possible? What was the most fun?
It was fun to think of creepy things that happened in Kaylee’s past that may or may not have involved telekinesis. The situations had to leave open the possibility of some kind of powerful force being in play but not be too clear cut. Because Kaylee herself isn’t even sure.
The hardest part was probably the timeline. Because the podcast stars airing–but only once a week. So the events in Kaylee’s life had to react to each episode and what it was revealing about her past.

What are some of your favorite recent reads?
I just read and really liked Sarah Pinborough’s 13 Minutes. And I loved my Roomies coauthor Sara Zarrr’s latest book, Gem and Dixie. I’m currently devouring Swamplandia! by Karen Russell.
