An evocative novel about a teen aroma expert who uses her extrasensitive sense of smell to mix perfumes that help others fall in love while protecting her own heart at all costs

Sometimes love is right under your nose. As one of only two aromateurs left on the planet, sixteen-year-old Mimosa knows what her future holds: a lifetime of weeding, mixing love elixirs, and matchmaking—all while remaining incurably alone. For Mim, the rules are clear: falling in love would render her nose useless, taking away her one great talent. Still, Mimosa doesn’t want to spend her life elbow-deep in soil and begonias. She dreams of a normal high school experience with friends, sports practices, debate club, and even a boyfriend. But when she accidentally gives an elixir to the wrong woman and has to rely on the lovesick woman’s son, the school soccer star, to help fix the situation, Mim quickly begins to realize that falling in love isn’t always a choice you can make.

At once hopeful, funny, and romantic, Stacey Lee’s The Secret of a Heart Note is a richly evocative coming-of-age story that gives a fresh perspective on falling in love and finding one’s place in the world.

YA ReviewMy Thoughts

The Secret of a Heart Note is a young adult standalone, magical realism romance by author Stacey Lee. I LOVED this book. And when I say I loved it, I really, really loved it. This book was so much more than I was expecting it to be. And I mean that in the best way possible. Because I was expecting this book to be a cute contemporary romance, but I didn’t realize the depth that the aromateur part of the story would be. I fell in love with the idea of someone mixing elixirs and smelling out the subtle notes and scents that make up a person. I really loved the idea of that. And Stacey Lee did an excellent job of making the world of Mim and her mom, the world of aromateurs come to life.

Mim is an awesome character. I loved her. She is kind of an outcast, but as sweet as can be. I loved her interactions with her classmates. So much, that I would love to see more in this world. I know this was meant to be a standalone, but I think Mim could do a lot more with some of her classmates(after they turn 18 of course. 😉 ) and I am kind of dying to read more of Mim and Court. I loved watching him get shy and embarrassed when Mim could smell how he was feeling. It was freakin’ adorable!

Which leads me to my next point. I can totally see how Mim would be an intimidating girl to be around. She can pretty much smell out your secrets. (not really, but kind of.) I would be nervous to be around her too. The Secret of a Heart Note is a super cute read. One I think all fans of young adult contemporaries and books featuring magic should read. I know it is only the second day of the year, but I think The Secret of a Heart Note might make its way on to my favorites list for 2017! That is how much I loved it. And I really, really loved Court. Seeing him with Mim was just beyond adorable.

Bottom line: The Secret of a Heart Note is a fantastic read. One full of warm fuzzies, a super cute romance, a great world filled with love witches as Mim calls herself, and a really nice story. I want to re-read this one! The Secret of a Heart Note is a favorite of mine.

P.S. Stacey Lee is another author to add to my “Author who is also an Attorney” list! 😉

Thank you so much for this review! I’ve seen this one around lately, and wasn’t sure about it, since I’m not really into romance as such, but the magical realism part is what was making me interested. Seeing your review means that I will definitely be picking this one up!

I love magical realism stories and this one snuck by my radar as I thought it was just a contemporary at first glance. The twist of an ‘aromateurs’ sounds fun and unique. Thanks for the lovely review, Michelle 🙂

I’m happy that you enjoyed this one! I really adore magical realism, but I just couldn’t get past my frustrations with Mim. =/ It was really cute though!
