Make a deal with the devil and you might get what you want, but will it be what you need?

Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.

And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.

Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So… what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?

Likely, the last thing you expect.

‘Beard Science’ is the third book in the Winston Brothers series, is a full-length romantic comedy novel, and can be read as a standalone.

Note: This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

My Thoughts

As soon as I read Beauty and the Mustache by Penny Reid, and I was introduced to the 6 Winston Brothers, I was hooked. I knew that I wanted to read their stories. And then I read Truth or Beard, and I loved that even more. There is not a Penny Reid book that I don’t love. And what I love even more is her writing. No one writes romance like Penny Reid. Her books are always witty, gripping and so, so, much fun to read.

Beard Science is the third book in the Winston Brothers series. I loved Duane and Jessica’s story, but I missed the second book in the series (which I need to read ASAP). Beard Science features Cletus and Jennifer (known around town as the Banana Cake Queen.) If I thought that I loved Duane and Jessica, somehow they didn’t hold a candle to Cletus. I don’t know how Penny does it, but she just makes me love each brother more than the last one! I remember I loved him all the way from the sausage grilling scene at their family dinner in book one. He cracked me up then, and it was super interesting to get to poke around in his mind because he is an interesting fellow. Totally fact driven. Logical to a fault, and when someone wrongs him he will not hesitate to take revenge. Which is actually where his and Jennifer’s paths intersect for the first time.

Jennifer was an interesting character. On one hand, I loved her. And I really did. I think she is perfect for Cletus, but on the other hand, I had some of the same misgivings about her that Cletus had initially. She does seem a little weak. I was kind of disappointed in a couple of her decisions. I appreciated and respected her when she started to stand up to herself, but she was not exactly what I pictured. She surprised me as a main character. Watching Cletus go from scientifically disinterested to very much interested in Jennifer was so funny and so darn satisfying to see. I loved watching him when she was on her fake date with Billy. That was great.

Penny Reid has a winning formula on her hands with this family. Each of the Winston boys has such a big personality. That paired with Penny’s talent for blending kick ass romance with spot on humor and comedic timing is pure gold. I get excited when I see that one of Penny Reid books is coming up on my TBR pile because I just know that it is going to be something great. And she has not let me down yet. I still love Duane, but I think Cletus might be my favorite of the Winston Brothers. But who knows, I might change my mind in the next book. I think I want to see Billy next, or maybe Beau. (but I am not sure how I feel about Shelly, so I am thinking I want to see him with someone else. I’m not sure yet.)

If you have not yet experienced the magic that is a Penny Reid romance, this is the series you need to start with. You will fall head over heels for the Winston Boys! I will take a hot look from any of them. Winston Brothers we are suited. I’ll take any of them.

About Penny Reid

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
