Jason Bourne meets The Sopranos in this breathtaking adventure

Sara Jane Rispoli is a normal sixteen-year-old coping with school and a budding romance--until her parents and brother are kidnapped and she discovers her family is deeply embedded in the Chicago Outfit (aka the mob).

Now on the run from a masked assassin, rogue cops and her turncoat uncle, Sara Jane is chased and attacked at every turn, fighting back with cold fury as she searches for her family. It's a quest that takes her through concealed doors and forgotten speakeasies--a city hiding in plain sight. Though armed with a .45 and 96K in cash, an old tattered notebook might be her best defense--hidden in its pages the secret to "ultimate power." It's why she's being pursued, why her family was taken, and could be the key to saving all of their lives.

Action packed, with fresh, cinematic writing, Cold Fury is a riveting and imaginative adventure readers will devour

5 Tips for Becoming a Better Writer

Ted Goeglein

Let’s start with the most basic premise—a person can’t become a writer if she doesn’t write. Think about it, talk about it, fantasize about it, but unless she commits an idea to screen, forget it. Which leads us to tip number one—

1.) Sit your butt down and write something. Anything. Start with your name.

This seems fairly elemental but for some people, it can be intimidating. They’re scared of rejection and that other people won’t like what they wrote. Okay, well—

2.) Some people will reject your work because they don’t like it.

Tough. That’s part of the game—of any game, if you think about it. Writing in particular is designed for failure because it’s thousands of words of individualistic expression versus a chef creating a single recipe or an artist painting one portrait. Just remember—

3.) The people who don’t like your work are wrong.

So keep writing, and whatever you do—

  4.) Copy other writers.

I don’t mean plagiarize, of course; stealing someone else’s art is a heinous crime deserving of severe physical punishment. I mean, select a writer you love and try to copy her or his style. This how every writer since the invention of written words became a writer, because—

5.) You can’t really copy someone else’s style.

The best you can do is emulate. Style is style, like a fingerprint, everyone gets her own. But in emulating a style, a person mixes it with her own sensibilities until it becomes something else—personal. When you see it on the page, you’ll know it’s yours and soon enough, readers will, too. That’s what being a writer means—giving parts of yourself away.

YA Review My Thoughts

Throwback review! (I reviewed and LOVED this book when it came out. Now the 3rd book in the series is releasing. I will be reading and reviewing books 2 and 3 on my blog soon, but if you are new to this series, check out my review of the first book:

Oh. My. Goodness! I am going to try and keep my gushing down to a minimum but no promises. This is my favorite book of 2012 to date! Cold Fury is the kind of book that makes me wish that I had a rating higher than 5 gavels. It is in the superstar league that I reserve for Harry Potter and The Hunger Games (in my opinion). I felt like it was written specifically for me. It felt super personal and I absolutely loved every page, every word, and every second of reading it!

Let’s start with Sarah Jane. Not only is Cold Fury my favorite book of 2012 so far- Sarah Jane is my favorite heroine ever. That’s right- I said EVER. She is just socool! I instantly connected with her. Her critical skepticism and starkly realistic view of the world made her a girl after my own heart. Plus she is a fighter- both literally and figuratively. She’s literally a boxer, and figuratively she never gives up. This is a girl I want on my side all the time. But the awesome thing is that she was so well rounded, but not perfect. She is pretty but she has an Italian nose. (which is a nice way of saying big nose. But I am allowed to say that because I too am an Italian with the same prominent facial feature) There are just so many quotes and lines from this book that I loved and completely captured my thoughts and emotions. I could honestly made a really cool composite of Cold Fury words of wisdom and quotes and hang it up in my room.

Sarah Jane isn’t the only cool character. Willy is hilarious and Sarah’s brother is so smart. Cold Fury is full of mystery, intrigue and tons of kick ass action and fighting. It deals with the Chicago mafia, and that aspect of it kind of reminded me of Mob Wives Chicago. Some of the stuff they say is hilarious. “once a rat, always a rat!” (I can’t be the only one to watch that reality show! Such a guilty pleasure)
Cold Fury has you running through the streets of Chicago and through secret doors all over the place! And the way that background information and “mafia history” is flawlessly incorporated into the story had me engrossed from cover to cover. The writing is excellent, the story line even better and the characters are three dimensional and magnificent. This is going to be a hard book to top for me. Run, don’t walk to your nearest bookstore to snag a copy of Cold Fury. You won’t be sorry, I promise!

Okay, obviously I need to read the first book.

I like the writing tips. I have so much in my head, but I just can’t get it to ‘paper’. I wish I cold just extract them directly from my brain.
