Summary:

I never told anyone how I felt about her. Not even Evie—not in so many words. And now, I’ll never get the chance to.
When a class assignment brings quiet Chase Mitman and the stunning Evie Cunningham together, a mutual attraction ignites. There’s only one problem—Evie already has a boyfriend—one who practically OWNS Whitley Prep, and her.Knowing their relationship comes at a price, Chase’s life collides with Evie’s, and after entrusting her with a tragic secret, the last thing he’d ever expect is to learn she keeps a few of her own.An innocent prank turns ugly. An anonymous note changes everything. And lives at Whitley Prep will never be the same.
From YA author Jennifer Murgia (Angel Star, Lemniscate, The Bliss), comes an emotional story focusing on the social agenda of students at a preparatory high school and the impact it has on their lives. BETWEEN THESE LINES offers a haunting reminder that sometimes the person you think you know the most is the one you know the least—and sometimes, that person is yourself.Fans of Simone Elkeles and Tammara Webber will appreciate Murgia, who understands that first love is heady and complicated and full of surprises.

If you are like me, then contemporaries are my go to summer. And Between These Lines is perfect for a quick and surprising but totally entralling romance. But it was totally different than I first thought it would be. I thought it would be this easy breezy book but there was much more meat on its bones than just a fun beach read. I loved it so much! You can’t help but fall in love with the characters and root for them the whole time. And the alternating point of view from chapter to chapter is a stylistic favorite of mine. I love getting to know the main guy and main girl this way. Plus I like the inside peek into a guys point of view in contemporary romances especially.

Chase starts out the story, which makes me feel like he was the true main characters and I have to say that I enjoyed it was the guy and not the girl. Typically the girl in the story takes center stage, and in between these lines both Chase and Evie are prominently featured but I still felt like it was a little bit more about Chase’s story, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

I liked Evie a lot but Chase just melted my heart. I just really connected with him. I wanted to just walk up to him and hug him half of the time. Sometimes to try and cheer him up and sometimes just because he was way too adorable. Evie was pretty cute too. Her boyfriend really bugged me and so did her friend, Tara.

I thought that Between These Lines was going to a light and easy romance, but it is darker and more complicated than that. Chase and Evie both have so much going on in their lives. They have both been called “damaged” for one reason or another. Chase lost his parents in a horrible accident and Evie’s parent’s marriage is falling apart and she is left to fend for herself. It was sad to think about these two great teens having to go through all of that on their own. Which is why I liked them so much for each other. They were able to bring each other out of their funks.

Between These Lines is beautifully written. You can’t help but to get sucked into the world of Whitley prep with its secrets and manipulation and Shane. (ugh I hate Shane!!) The ending completely took me by surprise too, which is not all that easy to do. Jennifer Murgia is a really fantastic job with Between These Lines and I think you need to go out and read it right now!

You know I can’t resist any book you rave about this much and give a 4.5 star rating to!!! I hadn’t heard of this book by yet (or the author, but that doesn’t mean much, cause I’m not too “in the know” these days), but it sounds pretty great! I will definitely read a contemporary/romance if it’s got some meat on its bones and isn’t all sparkles and rainbows…and it sounds like this would satisfy me. Thanks for introducing me to this author!

Oh, and by the way, …… CONGRATULATIONS on graduating LAW SCHOOL!!!! I’m so happy for you, and proud of you, and I don’t know HOW you got through it while also putting so much time into this blog! Just remember, USE THAT “super seekrit” ability on your resume and in interviews (if, that is, you do not already have a job) to show how responsible and good with time management you are!! It’s a winner! Having counseled countless law students and many alums during five years in career services, I can remember all of TWO students who had blogs – and you better believe that they were memorable for it.

Okay, enough of that….just wanted to say congrats and remind you that you should be SO PROUD OF YOURSELF. Best of luck as you study for and sit for the bar exam, if you plan to do that. If you ever have questions you think I can answer or need help in any way, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
