“When a book is set in the right place, that place almost becomes a character itself.
In high school, I spent a summer backpacking around Colorado, and I fell in love with it. We’d hike through these long, dense mountain trails, and then find ourselves in a huge alpine field with lots of little purple flowers. Then, a few feet higher up, the ground would be covered in snow and ice. It was pretty magical! When I was conceptualizing A BeautifulDark, it felt right to set it in Colorado. The natural world factors prominently into the mythology of the series, and I loved the idea of all of this celestial drama playing out against this majestic background. I could just picture the huge white and black wings soaring above the mountains. It feltvery romantic and exciting.”
